After writing about Taco Bell’s assault of the fast food breakfast daypart and McDonald’s response I set out to get some firsthand battlefield exposure. Heading out with my trusted sidekick Joshua, we set our sights on Taco Bell to get our mitts on some Waffle Tacos, from there we’d go thru McDonald’s drive thru to get some free coffee and then home for a food selfie and breakfast.

The Taco Bell was decked out with window signs proclaiming the availability of breakfast including some real nice pictures of a Waffle taco and A.M. Crunchwrap. The menu board featured the full breakfast offering and more product pictures. Our reception over the speaker box was enthusiastic and friendly. We ordered bacon and sausage versions of the Waffle Taco and something called Cinnabon Delights (anything with Cinnabon in the name has to taste good).

On our way to McDonald’s we passed a Hardee’s (I resisted the temptation to turn in to get some biscuits). At McDonald’s we ordered two free coffees. Despite this offer being prominently displayed on their menu board our service person seemed confused, she said, “Wait a minute”.  After almost a minute she asked us to come to the first window, once there she didn’t really know how to handle us and sent us to the second window. After another wait the associate at that window asked, “Two free small coffees right?” I replied, “Yes ma’am”. It took three people to get our order, they all appeared to be confused and disoriented. The way McDonald’s team handled our order begged me ask if many people were taking advantage of this offer. They said yes but the way they handled us caused me to wonder.

Once home we did a food selfie and then dove in. The Waffle Tacos were good, the coffee was okay but the Cinnabon Delights, little cinnamon sugar coated deep fried dough balls filled with warm Cinnabon frosting, were out of this world. Bottom line, I can’t wait to get Hardee’s biscuits one day soon. I’m so glad I found a new Hardee’s closer to my house on this morning’s road trip. It was worth all the effort after all!Waffle Taco & Coffee
